Tide Tops was created one warm summer evening in Eastern North Carolina — a place known for its laid-back beach days, backyard barbecues, and, unfortunately, the constant battle with sand and bugs. After spending the day outside, my girlfriend and I were relaxing when we both noticed the same frustrating problem: every time we set our drink down, something ended up in it — a gust of sand, a fly, or worse.
At the time, I had just gotten into 3D printing and was constantly experimenting. My girlfriend loved watching the printer in action and seeing what new things I could create. That night, I asked her, “What should I make for you next?” Without hesitation, she said, “Why not something to cover a can?”
That was it — the spark. Within a few hours, I had designed and printed our first prototype. It fit snugly on a soda can and kept anything unwanted out. We knew right away this was something more than just a fun idea. It actually solved a problem we dealt with all the time, and it worked better than we expected.
But there was another part to it — she mentioned how annoying it was to open a soda can with long nails. So I added one more feature: a little tab to help lift the can’s pull tab. It made the product even more useful. You could pop the top open with one hand and keep it covered all day long.
